Commonly Used Embroidery Stitches
|

BRICK STITCH
Work a row of straight
stitches, leaving the width of a stitch between every adjoining stitch.
Make a second row of stitches in the same manner but interlock them with
the first row of stitches. If you turn your work on its side, you will
see how the stitches look like a brick surface.
|

BUTTON HOLE STITCH
Bring the thread out on the lower line,
insert the needle in the position in the upper line and take a straight
downward stitch, keeping the working thread under the point of the
needle. Pull up the stitch to form a loop and repeat.
|
|

CHAIN STITCH
Bring the thread up at the top of the
line and hold it down with the left thumb. Insert the needle where
it last emerged and bring the needle point out a short distance away.
Pull the thread through, keeping the working thread under the needle
point.
|

COUCHING
Lay down the thread to be couched, and
with another thread catch it down with small stitches worked over the
top. |
|

FRENCH KNOT
Bring the needle up, wrap
the thread around
point of needle, then insert needle close to where needle emerged. Just
be sure that it is not in the exact spot where thread emerged or knot
will pull through. Draw the thread to wrong side, holding knot in place with
left thumb.
|

HERRINGBONE STITCH
This stitch is used for borders and is
worked from left to right. Bring the thread out at left end of lower guide
line. Make a small stitch from right to left on the upper guide line. Now
make a similar stitch from right to left on the lower guide line. Keep
stitches very even wit correct spacing.
|

SATIN STITCH
Bring needle up on one side of the design line
and then insert on
the opposite
side of the design line. Carry the stitch behind your work and come up
again
on first design line. Stitches should be very smooth and close together.
Make sure each stitch is parallel to the preceding one. For a puffy effect, try
padding the area with a layer of spilt stitch, chain stitch or satin
stitch, then work the final layer of satin stitch over it.
|

STEM STITCH
Working from left to right, take regular
small stitches along the line of the design. The thread always
emerges on the left side of the previous stitch. This stitch is
used for the flower stems, outlines, etc. If worked closely
together, it can also be worked as a filling stitch within a shape until
it is completely filled.
